{"id":4879,"date":"2011-03-04T10:22:26","date_gmt":"2011-03-04T17:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blackhandproductions.com\/?p=4879"},"modified":"2011-03-04T10:32:48","modified_gmt":"2011-03-04T17:32:48","slug":"irish-pubs-of-chicago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blackhandproductions.com\/?p=4879","title":{"rendered":"Irish Pubs of Chicago."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"DSC_0029.jpg by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5495761069\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5054\/5495761069_84e8a6a45e.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0029.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last night I went with <a title=\"Chicagometsfan.com\" href=\"http:\/\/chicagometsfan.com\">Julie<\/a> on my second <a title=\"Chicago History Pub Crawl.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagohs.org\/planavisit\/upcomingevents\/tours\/history-pub-crawls\">Chicago History Pub Crawl<\/a> organized by the <a title=\"Chicago History Museum.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagohs.org\/\">Chicago History Museum<\/a>. \u00a0The theme was &#8216;Erin Go Beer! \u00a0Irish Pubs of Chicago&#8217;. \u00a0Unlike the first tour we went on there was no trolley service but all the bars were in the same neighborhood so walking wasn&#8217;t an issue.* \u00a0The pace of this tour seemed much less frantic with two of our bars being right next to each other. \u00a0Once again\u00a0Liz Garibay from the Chicago History Museum was our guide. \u00a0Towards the end of our tour she asked the group &#8216;What is the difference between an English Pub and an Irish Pub?&#8217; \u00a0Which I of course replied &#8216;Oppression&#8217;. \u00a0Liz&#8217;s answer was the Irish name their pubs after people where as the English don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>I liked my answer better.<\/p>\n<p>Paddy Longs<br \/>\n<a title=\"DSC_0006.JPG by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5496353586\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5136\/5496353586_2b7bb3ffb8.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0006.JPG\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Paddy Long's Beer and Bacon Pub.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paddylongs.com\/\">Paddy Long&#8217;s<\/a> is currently known as a &#8216;Bacon Bar&#8217; due to their copious amounts of bacon on the\u00a0<a title=\"Paddy Long's Menu.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.paddylongs.com\/paddy-longs-food\/menu\/\">menu<\/a>. \u00a0The building was built in 1894 and the bar was originally a grocery store and then in 1917 it was Mrs. Marie&#8217;s Deli. \u00a0It didn&#8217;t transition into a bar until 1937 when it was purchased by Lawrence Fry who owned and operated <a title=\"Chicago Bar Project:  Lawry's Tavern.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chibarproject.com\/Memoriam\/Lawry%27s\/Lawry%27s.htm\">Lawry&#8217;s Tavern<\/a> until 2007. \u00a0In 2007 the current owners rehabbed the entire space only maintaining the original bar. \u00a0The bar is currently known for it&#8217;s craft beer list and endless supply of bacon.<\/p>\n<p>Harrigan&#8217;s<br \/>\n<a title=\"DSC_0009.JPG by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5495763285\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5059\/5495763285_9f68408e83.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0009.JPG\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building <a title=\"Yelp:  Harrigan's Pub.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/harrigans-chicago\">Harrigan&#8217;s<\/a> is in was built in 1917, from the 1930&#8217;s on it was a shady bar until a couple of Irishmen from Dublin fixed it up in 1988. \u00a0It&#8217;s name has changed a couple times since then as the bar has changed hands amongst friends. \u00a0One of the more interesting features is the bar that is covered in <a title=\"Wikipedia:  Irish Penny.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Penny_(Irish_decimal_coin)\">Irish Pennies<\/a>. \u00a0\u00a0Of all the bars we visited on the tour Harrigan&#8217;s\u00a0was by far the most legit Irish Pub. \u00a0The bartender (singular) wasn&#8217;t the wee bit overwhelmed by a random crowd of 30 people on a Thursday night. \u00a0Guinness &amp; Smithwick&#8217;s kegs needed changing after the first group ordered and this didn&#8217;t phase him at all. In between a crowd of people waiting on their Irish beer he had a pizza delivered for himself and he proceeded to card everyone on the tour. \u00a0We were not changing the pace of his evening and I respect that.<\/p>\n<p>Trinity<br \/>\n<a title=\"DSC_0025.jpg by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5496350384\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5295\/5496350384_bbc8e34e29.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0025.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building that <a title=\"Trinity\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitybarchicago.com\/\">Trinity<\/a> is in was built in 1910 and was originally a meat market (it still holds this distinction on certain nights). \u00a0In this space in 1980 <a title=\"Planet99.com:  Peg Leg Sullivan's.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.planet99.com\/chicago\/bars\/peg_leg_sullivans.html\">Peg Leg Sullivan&#8217;s<\/a> opened which is named for the true spark behind the <a title=\"Wikipedia:  The Great Chicago Fire.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Chicago_Fire\">The Great Chicago Fire<\/a>. \u00a0In 2005 the bar was purchased by three firemen of Irish decent and renamed Trinity. \u00a0I was a little disappointed to be going to Trinity,\u00a0\u00a0it&#8217;s the only bar on the list that I&#8217;ve been to on more than one occasion and it&#8217;s not really an Irish bar. \u00a0They didn&#8217;t have any Irish beer at the upstairs bar (not sure about the downstairs bar).<\/p>\n<p>Hidden Shamrock<br \/>\n<a title=\"DSC_0028.jpg by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5495760573\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5098\/5495760573_26699d3678.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0028.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The building the <a title=\"Hidden Shamrock\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thehiddenshamrock.com\/\">Hidden Shamrock<\/a> is in was also built in 1910 and was originally a Draftsman&#8217;s office. \u00a0In 1960 it became Chasin&#8217;s Tavern and in 1970 it was renamed Pat O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s. \u00a0In 1985 the bar was purchased by three men from <a title=\"Belfast: The Troubles &amp; The Crown Bar.\" href=\"http:\/\/blackhandproductions.com\/?p=4332\">Belfast<\/a> who named it the Hidden Shamrock after fact that all three men have shamrock tattoos on their butt. \u00a0One of the owners is friends with legendary Newsman <a title=\"Wikipedia:  Bill Kurtis.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Kurtis\">Bill Kurtis<\/a> and there are pictures throughout the bar of scenes from Belfast during a trip they took for a story Kurtis was working on.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"DSC_0013.jpg by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5496348880\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5140\/5496348880_b2021a864f_t.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0013.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"67\" \/><\/a><a title=\"DSC_0017.jpg by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5496349262\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5098\/5496349262_3d883f3737_t.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0017.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"67\" \/><\/a><a title=\"DSC_0030.jpg by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5496352448\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5133\/5496352448_ded1fbbb78_t.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0030.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"67\" \/><\/a><a title=\"DSC_0022.jpg by bronder, on Flickr\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/bronder\/5495758865\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm6.static.flickr.com\/5053\/5495758865_f22c5baa3f_t.jpg\" alt=\"DSC_0022.jpg\" width=\"100\" height=\"67\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sidenotes:<br \/>\n* Previous Chicago History Pub Crawls: \u00a0<a title=\"A Tour of Chicago Dive Bars.\" href=\"http:\/\/blackhandproductions.com\/?p=4760\">A Tour of Chicago Dive Bars<\/a>.<br \/>\n** All of the bars were on either Diversey or Halstead. \u00a0Diversey was named for <a title=\"Wikipedia:  Michael Diversey.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Diversey\">Michael Diversey<\/a> who was an early brewery in Chicago.<br \/>\n*** Julie and I both earned the <a title=\"The Kruser.com: Luck of the Irish.  \" href=\"http:\/\/thekruser.com\/untappd\/badges\/luck-of-the-irish\/\">&#8216;Luck of the Irish&#8217; badge<\/a> on <a title=\"untappd.com\" href=\"http:\/\/untappd.com\">untappd<\/a> during the tour.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night I went with Julie on my second Chicago History Pub Crawl organized by the Chicago History Museum. \u00a0The theme was &#8216;Erin Go Beer!
