Heisman: Fumblerooski and Quarters

John Heisman

Tommorrow the Downtown Atheltic Club will award 72nd Heisman Trophy, named for John Heisman. Today’s New York Times had an article about John Heisman, the forgoten man behind the trophy. For those who don’t know Heisman was one of the inovators that made the game what it is today. After scouting a game between North Carolina and Georgia in 1895:

Heisman said he saw the first forward pass in history when a bungled punt attempt led a desperate punter to illegally fling the football over the line to a teammate who ran for a touchdown. Heisman walked away convinced it was the play that would save football from itself. As Heisman wrote, violent scrums based around bruising running plays were “killing the game as well as the players.”

In 1904-5, 44 players had been reported killed in football games, with hundreds sustaining serious injuries. Heisman said the forward pass “would scatter the mob.”

Among other advancements made by Heisman was the fumblerooski, creation of Quarters, and the scoreboard. Needless to say the game wouldn’t be the same without him.

Penguins - DevilsPenguins - Devils

On Friday Julie and I beared ridiculous parking protocol to see my Penguins lose to the Devils 5-2. It looked like the night was going to go well for the Penguins when they scored within the first two minutes but it was pretty much downhill from there. We did get to see the Rookie Russian Defector, Evgeni Malkin, score a goal for the Penguins to keep them in the game early in the second period. The turnout for the game was pretty sad with thousands of empty seats. Nothing like Madison Square Garden last year, plus no welcome sign.

Columbus Trip: Ohio State – Michigan Weekend.

This past Saturday I went to Columbus for the Ohio State – Michigan game. After waiting in the ‘Cab Line’ (I didn’t know there was such a thing) I managed to share a ride with a USC grad and a couple from Chicago. The couple decided to fight the whole way to campus and really tried to talk the cab driver into stopping to drop off their luggage before taking them to their destination. I took the chance when we stopped for the luggage drop to get out of the car and proceed on foot. The USC girl followed as we walked about 2 miles to Lane Avenue.

The tailgate situation wasn’t bad but it was much colder than I had anticipated. I ended up watching the majority of the game at the Varsity Club where I ran in to Keith (see photo below) and hung out with Andy for a quarter or two.

On Sunday I caught the Steelers – Browns game at King Avenue Five with the usual suspects. As you can tell Nick Barbone was in no shape to see his Browns loose once again to the Steelers. At one point Nick clearly resembled a Hobo when he was ordering a water at the bar dressed in a borrowed coat.
