4th of July Trip: Galena, Potosi & Dubuque

For the 4th of July this year, Julie and I headed a couple hours west to Galena, Potosi and Dubuque. We’ve driven through Galena and had dinner in Dubuque once before but this was a our first time spending any kind of real time in either of these towns. We were just looking for a place to spend the 4th that still had rooms and was driving distance. Galena and Dubuque made the cut.

Galena, Illinois

In Galena we stayed at the DeSoto House Hotel which dates back to 1855 when the town was a booming metropolis of 14,000 residents. The DeSoto has housed many historical figures from Abraham Lincoln to Mark Twain and even US Grant’s 1868 Presidential Campaign Headquarters. The hotel sits directly in the center of town and underwent a complete renovation about 25 years ago.

Root Beer Revelry

To my delight and surprise, connected to the DeSoto is the Root Beer Revelry bar/shop. Revelry has three root beers on tap: Millstream, 1919 and Princess Potosa. You can order 12oz cups or get a 24oz frosted mug and of course they do floats. They also have a wide selection of bottled root beer. You can do a mix and match of six or four packs, or just buy them by the bottle. I had a 24oz frosted mug of Millstream and then did a mix and match six pack that I’m trying to slowly work through.

Galena Brewing Company

We spent the afternoon at the Galena Brewing Company working our way through their selection. I was a fan of the seasonal Identity Crisis which is a Black IPA. We didn’t eat there but they seem to have a wide selection of food and a large dining area.

Parade
UntitledUntitledUntitled
I guess we should have known that all towns have parades on the 4th of July but it didn’t really dawn on me until we got into town. The parade basically did a loop down Main Street which was right outside our hotel and more importantly Revelry. A lot of Churches, high school bands and Moses were in the parade. Galena claims 9 Union Generals who served in the Civil War, so they had 9 reenactors in the parade. Seems legit to me.

Grant’s House
UntitledUntitledUntitled
Speaking of Civil War Generals, US Grant lived and worked in Galena just preceding the Civil War. After the war, the citizens of Galena purchased and furnished this House for Grant as a token of gratitude for saving the Union. The Grant family only lived in the house for a short period of time but maintained the house for several years and until eventually donating it to Galena.

Fireworks
UntitledUntitledUntitled
As we were walking near the river earlier in the day we started seeing people claim their spots along the river bank for the fireworks. Our hotel was selling tickets to their rooftop for a viewing party/cookout, we scored tickets and watched the fireworks from there. It was a rather extensive display but the DJ rocking out on the roof was a little too much.

VFW Club

After the fire works we headed down to the VFW Club for a couple of drinks. I managed to commandeer the jukebox and play quite of lot of Neil Diamond. I consider this my cultural gift to Galena.

Potosi, Wisconsin

The next day we took a detour to Dubuque and stopped by The Potosi Brewery. The brewery is setup at the site of the original Potosi brewery and it’s a sprawling complex that includes a Winery, The Brewers Museum and the current brewery. It’s also a major stop over for motorcyclists. I think the crowd was about 70% people who had rode in on a bike. The beer selection was good but I was partial to the Pilsener, it was a hot day and this was the perfect beer. We had lunch there as well; a fish sandwich and fried cheese curds. There were a lot of people stopping in for growlers to go. A father came in with his two sons and had five growlers of Princess Potosa Root Beer and then order a round of root beer while he waited. This of course inspired me to take one for the road.

Dubuque, Iowa

In Dubuque we stayed at the recently renovated Hotel Julien Dubuque which dates back to 1914. The Hotel Julien was a much more modern space than the DeSoto, really one of the better hotels I’ve stayed in in a long time. We made dinner reservations at Mainstreet Steak & Chophouse only to discover that it is in the same building as the bar we had dinner at the last time we were in Dubuque, the German Bank.  Dinner was good and I think we should have hung out there the rest of the night instead of trying to find a decent bar.  Every place we went had a DJ mixing songs that should never be mixed, even our hotel bar.

Fenelon Place Elevator Company
UntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitledUntitled
One of the places we wanted to checkout was the Fenelon Place Elevator Company’s incline. From what I could gather online the view is good and you can see three states (Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin) and the Mississippi River. The incline was originally installed for private use but is now a tourist attraction. It takes about 3 minutes for it ride up or down. The turnstile at the top is reportedly from the 1893 World’s Columbia Expedition in Chicago.

Mississippi Riverwalk
UntitledUntitled
Saturday morning before heading back to Chicago we made our way down to the Mississippi Riverwalk to checkout the river and the site of the Old Star Brewery. Despite the heat, the river walk was really nice. I imagine the main building does some decent business for events with the overhang and the river views.

Philadelphia Hockey Trip

DSC_0007.JPG
This year for our annual Hockey Trip we headed to Philadelphia for the Flyers – Penguins game.  This was supposed to be the most ‘hostile’ environment we’ve yet experienced, but oddly enough it was the most subdued crowd we’ve seen yet.  I’m sure this had a lot to do with it being a Thursday night and the entire row of Eastern Europeans who sat behind us but nonetheless it was a manageable crowd experience.  Also Crosby was out so Flyers fans didn’t have anyone to boo.

The Pens started hot for about three minutes and then they basically didn’t compete until the third period.  With that being said, we were one lame three-bounce-goal from pulling even in regulation.  Malkin looked good but held onto the puck too long, Letang is sorely missed and Jagr looks like a 40 year old hockey player.

After the game ended we all headed towards the mens room which once again attests to how placid the crowd was.  While waiting in line we learned that Ben Roethlisberger had torn his ACL and was down for the year.  Moving forward I will try not get my news in public restrooms.

Nodding Head Brewery
DSC_0139.jpg
Nodding Head Brewery as you would assume is filled with wall to wall bobbleheads, kind of reminded me of home.  We ended up catching the tail end of the Steelers – Browns game and to our surprise Ben was still playing.  I tried the Sled Wrecker and then moved on to the 3C which was one of the better beers I had all weekend.

Cheese Steaks

As the night came to a close we soldiered on to partake in cheese steaks.  We grabbed a cab and headed over to Pat’s Cheese Steaks and Geno’s Steaks.  I wasn’t aware they were both 24 hour establishments, so we were able to have sandwiches from both to compare and contrast.  There were only three of us for this part of the trip so we ended up ordering two sandwiches from Geno’s and three from Pat’s. To say Pat’s is better than Geno’s would be a major understatement.  Either way we suffered ‘Geno’s Revenge‘ the next afternoon.

DiNic’s
IMG_5248
After we got up and moving around Friday morning we headed over to Reading Terminal Market to checkout the shops and then to get a DiNic’s Roast Pork sandwich.  I have to say this sandwich was much better than the Cheese Steaks from the night before.

Liberty Bell

After lunch we continued on our walk of Philadelphia checking out the Liberty Bell.  The display has recently gone through a renovation and the tower it used to be housed in at Independence Hall can be seen through the screen in the photograph above.  I think it is a really unique way of displaying the bell and once the renovations of the bell tower are complete it will be a stunning setting.

Yards Brewing

After another epic Furman March which took us under three highway underpasses and a series of block houses that were transplanted from Belfast we ended up at Yards Brewing.  The majority of our party was not too high on making this trek but I think we were all pleased we did.  In addition to Yards’ regular beer line up they had the ‘Ales of the Revolution’ beers which is where I focused my attention.  I had General Washington’s Tavern Porter and Thomas Jefferson’s Tavern Ale.

Craft Ale House – Limerick, PA
DSC_0144.JPGDSC_0143.JPG
The Craft Ale House was a late addition to our itinerary by Josh’s mom who clearly knows a thing or two about beer selections.  Craft has one of the larger bottle lists I’ve ever seen and it’s basically a liquor store as well where you can create your own six packs.  I had a Wipeout IPA and the Jai Alai IPA. This was one of the highlights of the trip.

Victory Brewing – Downingtown, PA

In addition to the Hockey game, stopping at  Victory Brewing Company was a priority destination.  Their brewpub is a large warehouse type building with a couple large dinning halls and a good size bar.  We ended up getting a drink at the bar and then grab a table for dinner.  The food was as good as the beer.  We ended up getting three growlers filled for the road.  You can see the amazing sophisticated growler filling station in the photograph above.  I’m pretty sure it was from the future.  With dinner I had the Donneybrook Stout, a Storm King and the Victory Lager.  It was the first time I’ve seen either the Lager or the Donneybrook Stout which was about the smoothest stout I’ve ever had.

** Kyber Pass is an intriguing place to say the least.

**** For some reason these are the standard growlers people on the East Coast use.  They look more like artillery pieces the beverage containers if you ask me.

While on our New England we spent an evening in Portland, Maine to catch the Mets minor league team, the Binghamton Mets play the Portland Sea Dogs at Hadlock Field.  The Sea Dogs are a Red Sox affiliate.  The stadium was nice and we had decent seats off third base and near the Mets dugout.  The Mets took the lead early in the 2nd inning off Raul Reyes‘ double when Salomon Manriquez scored.  Manriquez would later play a key part in Julie’s fan experience.  They went on to  win 7-2 making it the only full game I’ve seen the Mets win all season.

** This is by far the most terrifying mascot in professional sports today.  For one, just look at him staring at me from across the ball park.  Second, he’s actually a trash can.  You are encourage to put garbage in him.  My understanding is he used to be green and thus named the ‘Green Trash Monster’ after Fenway Park’s Green Monster.  He’s no longer green but his belt buckle still says ‘TM’ so he’s just a Trash Monster.  Needless to say he is very disturbing.

Finishing the night in Portland, ME @thegreatlostbear -

***** After the game we headed over to the Great Lost Bear for dinner and a drink.  Their beer selection is up there with all great beer bars.
