BlizzNasty.

BlizzNasty began yesterday around 1pm and continued until about noon today. With nearly everyone in Chicago with a snow day we decided to throw together a last minute cookout.

Foraging

Julie and I headed out into the neighborhood for supplies.  We made our way to Dinkel’s Bakery which was packed considering the 18 inches of snow on the ground.  We picked up a couple donuts for our neighbor and got a batch of pretzel buns for our cookout.  Then we headed back up Lincoln to Paulina Meat Market which was also open. We were their first customers of the day, so we scored some burgers and charcoal.  It was great to know that with all the snow both places with in walking distance were open.

At around 2pm we started the cookout, we used the snow as a cooler and we setup the chairs and table in the middle of the snow.  We spent about two hours in the yard as the burgers cooked.  The sun was out and the weather was really good considering all that has occurred in the past 24 hours.

Train Football

After our cookout we headed down Marshfield in search of a suitable football field. We ended up playing under the Brownline Paulina Stop for a little one-on-one Train Football.  I’m pretty sure we’ll all be feeling this for the rest of the week.  A running game is probably the best option in this weather.  As you can see in the video above I’m pretty sure I blew my knee out.

A Tour of Chicago Dive Bars.

DSC_0006.JPG

Last night Julie and I went on a History Pub Crawl hosted by the Chicago History Museum.  The tour was of titled: Chicago’s Greatest Dive Bars.

DSC_0016.JPG

Our first stop on the tour was Rose’s Lounge which I’d been to once before. It’s the closest thing to Johnnies which holds a special place in my heart.  Rose opened up shop in 1962 after buying the building that owned The Pour House which dated back to 1918.  According to our guide, Rose immigrated from Macedonia and after several years as a factory worker she decided it was not for her.

Of all the bars on the tour Margie’s is the closet to our house, had the friendliest bartender and as far as I can tell it’s the only place in Chicago with $1 steins on Monday nights.  Like many bars in the Lincoln Square neighborhood Margie’s started out as a German bar.  Margie, the original owner, was a rare female bartender in the neighborhood when her husband bought The Horseshoe bar for her.  The Horseshoe dated back to 1910.

Richard’s Bar was by far the most lively and packed place of the night.  Oddly enough Julie was here last weekend for a bachelorette party so she had a good idea what we were getting into.  The building was also the oldest of all the places we visited, dating from the 1860’s.  It was originally a grocery store up until the 1920’s when it was transfered into a bar with a brothel upstairs.  In the 1990’s the owner named the place after her husband’s brother.

Old Town Ale House was the only bar we stopped at that I had been to more than once.  The Old Town Ale House originally opened across the street from it’s current location in 1958.  There was a fire in 1971 and the bar moved to it’s current location.  For those that have never been, you can tell by my photographs below that the current owner is one hell of a painter.

4th Annual Santa Pub Crawl

DSC_0043.JPGDSC_0053.JPGDSC_0026.JPGDSC_0014.JPG

This past Friday Santa went out for a night on the town before getting to the serious business of delivering toys. You can tell by many of the photographs that the big man is under a lot of stress. We started the night at Southport Lanes and made our way to Blue Bayou but as usual Santa ran out of steam after crossing Addison.  It’s all candy canes and big helpings of jolly until you have to walk those couple blocks between Lange’s and Hye Bar.  Then it’s all disheveled, angry depressed Santa.

The big man did manage to bring a lot of joy along the way and a good time was had by all.  Thanks to everyone who made it out this year.
