Flatbed Orange at the Cubby Bear (and more).

Flat Bed Orange at the Cubby Bear.

Last night a group of us witnessed the inaugural performance of Flatbed Orange with Nick Barbone on vocals.  The show was pretty good and the Cubby Bear wasn’t so bad.  The sound was better than expected and the lighting was pretty impressive.

Now the performance of the headliner, Indignant, was another story all together.  They were clearly filming this concert for some reason or another.  I firmly believe this because videographer used the ‘wheel camera’ device that allowed him the flexibility to ‘capture the moment’.  To say he was ‘over the top’ would be to underestimate the level of seriousness to which he takes his job.  This man was an artist surrounded by his medium.

I can’t wait to see the DVD.

Two days of Chicago Baseball.

The Mets and Yankees were in town this week for series’ against the Cubs and the White Sox which provided us the chance to see both parks, Wrigley Field and U.S. Cellular Field, this week.  Julie managed to do both stadiums in the same day but some of us work like normal people and had to spread out this adventure over two days.

Of course the Mets lost and the Yankees won but sometimes that’s how things work.  I will have to say U.S. Cellular Field is much more accommodating than Wrigley Field.  Plus the fan base is a little more sane.  Granted I sat in the Bleachers at Wrigley and you really can’t see much from there.

I nearly spark a riot by responding to a crazed fan who was carry the “It’s gonna happen” sign.  The “It’s gonna happen” phenomena started last year meaning the Cubs are going to finally win the World Series.  To me it’s not really a slogan you can use more than one year.  Especially if it doesn’t happen.  In not so many words I informed the guy that he said the same thing last year.  From there it was pretty much a downward spiral.

It’s been a long couple of days.

The French are not to be Trifled with.

After the French Luxury ship the Ponant was hijacked by Pirates the French did what you expect any sea-worthy nation to do. They attacked.

After the owner of the ship payed a ransom of $2 million dollars a team of French Commandos went into action:

Once the crew had been brought ashore safely, French attack helicopters tracked the pirates, believed to be fishermen, to the village of Jariban and moved in when they saw some of them attempting to flee the scene, the general said.

A sniper disabled the engine of the get-away car, while another helicopter dropped off three French commandos who captured six of the 12 pirates.

The pirates “gave themselves up without too much difficulty”, the general said, adding that those captured would be handed over to French justice officials.

“It was an intervention, not a pulverisation,” he added.

Now the French stance on Piracy is one I can get behind. The pirates are currently facing trial in France for their crimes. The British on the other hand have a different strategy:

The British government on the other hand, to the incredulity of many in the maritime industry, has taken a curiously pathetic approach to piracy. While the French were flying six of the captured pirates to Paris to face trial, the British Foreign Office issued a directive to the once vaunted Royal Navy not to detain any pirates, because doing so could violate their human rights. British warships patrolling the pirate-infested waters off Somalia were advised that captured pirates could claim asylum in Britain and that those who were returned to Somalia faced beheading for murder or a hand chopped off for theft under Islamic law.

I’m stumped. Isn’t this the same empire that would just as soon string your dead pirate ass up in Execution Dock?

How far they’ve fallen.
