135 Years to the Day.

Today is the 135th Anniversary of College Football. The first game was played by between Princeton University and Rutgers University on this day in 1869. Rutgers eked out a 6-4 victory on that mythic fall afternoon:

The game, which bore little resemblance to its modern-day counterpart, was played with two teams of 25 men each under rugby-like rules, but like modern football, it was “replete with surprise, strategy, prodigies of determination, and physical prowess,” to use the words of one of the Rutgers players.

William J. Leggett, captain of the Rutgers team who later became a distinguished clergyman of the Dutch Reformed Church, suggested that rules for the contest be adopted from those of the London Football Association. Leggett’s proposal was accepted by Captain William Gunmere of Princeton, who later became Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of New Jersey.

At 3 pm on that memorable afternoon, the 50 combatants and about 100 spectators gathered on the field. Most of the assemblage sat on a low wooden fence and watched the athletes doff hats, coats and vests and use suspenders as belts. To distinguish themselves from the bareheaded visitors, 50 Rutgers students, including players, donned scarlet-colored scarfs which they converted into turbans.

Today Princeton University will host Penn University and Rutgers University will head to Boston College.

T.O. = DEAD MAN.

Adding insult to injury Terrel Owens of the Philadelphia Eagles brought up the topic of Ray Lewis murdering another man. Never a good idea because Ray Lewis will kill you. TO: I’m not the Bad Guy, I didn’t kill nobody:

“It’s discouraging at times that I get labeled and put in that same mold and that I’m the worst guy that ever put on a uniform,” Owens said. “It’s funny. I listen to all the comments and it baffles me.

“You have a guy like Ray Lewis, who I thought he was pretty much my friend. This is a guy, double murder case, and he could have been in jail, but it seems like the league embraces a guy like that. But I’m going out scoring touchdowns and having fun, but I’m the bad guy.”

T.O. you may not be a Bad Guy but you will definitely be a Dead Man.

The American Past-time: Football & Politics.

You can’t argue with the combination of History, Football and Politics. Today the Green Bay Packers defeated the Washington Redskins 28-14 and in doing so possibly decided the Presidential Election. Since 1936 if the Redskins win their finale home game before the election the incumbent party will win the election. Today the Redskins managed to let one slip away:

Washington’s Clinton Portis celebrated the apparent winning touchdown with a leap into the end zone, capping a 43-yard reception that gave the Redskins a one-point lead with 2:35 to play.
Oops. Scratch that. Flag on the play…
Receiver James Thrash was whistled for illegal motion
