Game #2: Ohio State at Purdue.

Yesterday Rob & Erin and I traveled down to West Lafayette for the Ohio State – Purdue game. I got to check off another Big Ten stadium from my list. Ohio State ended up destroying Purdue 23-7 in what was a routine outing by the defense.

I’ve never been to Purdue so I can’t say this definitely but the town of West Lafayette just plainly smelled bad. I’m not sure if there was some kind of gas leak or not but the entire stadium smelled rank. We only sat in our seats for the first 5 minutes of the game because it was unbearable. Rob managed to score a field pass so we took turns watching the game from the Purdue sideline near the 10 yard line. Needless to say it was awesome.

I’m moving right along with my goal of visiting all the Big Ten Stadiums. West Lafayette was only a 2 hour drive from Chicago making it an easy trip especially for a night game.

Columbus Trip: Ohio State – Michigan Weekend.

This past Saturday I went to Columbus for the Ohio State – Michigan game. After waiting in the ‘Cab Line’ (I didn’t know there was such a thing) I managed to share a ride with a USC grad and a couple from Chicago. The couple decided to fight the whole way to campus and really tried to talk the cab driver into stopping to drop off their luggage before taking them to their destination. I took the chance when we stopped for the luggage drop to get out of the car and proceed on foot. The USC girl followed as we walked about 2 miles to Lane Avenue.

The tailgate situation wasn’t bad but it was much colder than I had anticipated. I ended up watching the majority of the game at the Varsity Club where I ran in to Keith (see photo below) and hung out with Andy for a quarter or two.

On Sunday I caught the Steelers – Browns game at King Avenue Five with the usual suspects. As you can tell Nick Barbone was in no shape to see his Browns loose once again to the Steelers. At one point Nick clearly resembled a Hobo when he was ordering a water at the bar dressed in a borrowed coat.

After 6 home games Ohio State is replacing its’ field for the second time this season.  It was originally replaced on September 26th after Ohio State’s 28-6 win over Penn State in the third home game of the season.  Now three games later the turf is being replaced again.  Here are my questions:

1.  How can a ‘Land Grant University‘,  with a degree program in Field Turf not have the agricutural skill to create a football field that will last 7 games?

2.  How can the same field need to be replaced twice in one season?

I just don’t get.  There must be a professor of Field Turf Management who knows how to plant some grass.  I don’t understand how 50 years ago they didn’t change the turf on a football field all year, yet they ran the ball probably 30% more.
