St. Ferdinand Fish Fry.

Last night I made my annual trip to a Fish Fry with Julie and Todd.  This year we once again went to St. Ferdinand which is in Belmont Central.  We  managed to get there early this year so the fish selection was much more varied (I got the perch while Julie and Todd went with the old standby: cod).  The food as always is not something to brag about but then again that’s not why we go.  We go for the atmosphere and the $2 beers.  This year we grabbed a table closest to the ‘bar’ and were rather sure that we were the only ones drinking.  Either way it went well and I’m starting to make a name for myself.

St. Fredinand has a different themed fish fry each Friday night during Lent.  If you are going to make the trip I highly recommend Elvis Night over all the others. We went on ‘Kids Night’ this year due to a scheduling conflict and it wasn’t quite as good as last year.  The entertainment consisted of clowns making balloons, a children’s book fair and 20 games of Bingo.

Like I said, go on Elvis Night and you won’t be disappointed.

Fish Fry Season.

Last night we headed out West to St. Ferdinand Church for their Lenten Fish Fry which just so happened to be Elvis Night.  I’ve been searching for a church Fish Fry since the last one I went to in Columbus was all out of fish back in 2006.  The fish at St. Ferdinand wasn’t the best (I’d say it was frozen/middle school lunch-esq) but the atmosphere was top notch.  First off the place was packed and you couldn’t find parking for a couple blocks.  There were at least two different banquet type rooms that we could see both had their own bar.  The bar by the way probably served the cheapest beer in all of Chicago:  $1.50 Miller Light (no tip jar).  Also, they were hocking girl scout cookies and carmel apples as soon as you walked in the door.  Elvis worked the crowd and took requests all the while handing out scarfs to old ladies.

Needless to say St. Ferdinand has their act together when it comes to a Fish Fry.

No one’s happy when I miss a Fish Fry.

I’m officially 0-1 on Fish Fry’s this season. After showing up at the Our Lady Victory Church merely 20 minutes before closing and seeing that the line was out the door I was notified that they were running out of fish. I would like to mention for the record I did not have an address for the church but I found it purely on the smell of beer batter from at least 3 blocks.

After the fish fry debacle we went to Brazen Head and finished the night at Press Grill. I grabbed something to eat at Press Grill but it wasn’t the same as the Fish Fry which was described to me all night by those who were lucky enough to make it on time.
