Yankee Stadium: Army – Notre Dame.

This past weekend Julie and I headed to Yankee Stadium for the Army – Notre Dame game.  This was the 50th game between both schools with Notre Dame leading the series 38-8-4.  The game itself wasn’t very close after the first quarter with Notre Dame winning 27-3 but the environment was really unique. Yankee Stadium was absolutely huge for a baseball stadium.

One of the more interesting parts of the night was the game balls arriving via Army paratroopers.  The jumbo tron had a video of them with head cams on in the plane and then throughout the entire jump.  It was surreal to see the stadium coming into view as these guys descended.

Grant’s Tomb

DSC_0037.JPGDSC_0012.JPGDSC_0022.JPG

This past trip to New York led Julie and I to Grant’s Tomb on the northwest side of Manhattan.  As National Parks go this has to be the most low maintenance park in the country.  There were three other people at the tomb while we were there and one of them was the Park Ranger.  To say it was on a large scale would be an understatement.  The entire building is basically one large room  leading down to where Grant and his wife are held in these massive granite sarcophagi.  The tomb is a little out of the way but well worth the trip if you’re in Manhattan looking to get off the beaten path.

Side Note:

* By far the most interesting part of the Tomb are the busts of Grant’s generals which sit on display around the sarcophagi.  The one watching over Grant is of course William Tecumseh Sherman who once famously said:

“General Grant is a great general. I know him well. He stood by me when I was crazy, and I stood by him when he was drunk; and now, sir, we stand by each other always.”

** For those who wonder, Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States and more importantly the Defender Of The Union who won the Civil War.

Revolution Brewing Company

IMG_0286.JPGI've finally made it to Revolution Brewery with @julierubes.photo 1.JPG

Last night Julie and I headed to Logan Square to finally checkout Revolution Brewing Company.  I’ve been meaning to get out there since they opened this year but it’s not really convient unless I’m taking the blue line from the Loop (which I did last night).  Revolution has more than 10 beers on tap, most of them their own beers and then they have a small selection of guest taps (Three Floyds Brewing and Victory Brewing) along with a large bottle selection.  I stuck with the house beers since you can’t get them anywhere else.  I started with the Workingman Mild, moved on to the Cross of Gold and finished the night with a couple Iron Fist Pale Ales.  I wish I would have had one Thee Destroyer but that will have to wait until next time.  I did get a growler of Cross of Gold to go so I’m set for the weekend.

In addition to all the beer, the food at Revolution Brewing is really good.  I managed to mooch some Bacon Fat Popcorn from the guy next to me and Julie and I had a soft pretzel and burgers.
