Blackhawks Home Opener.

Last night Julie and I went to the United Center for the Blackhawks home opener against the Redwings. Before the game the Stanley Cup was on hand for the raising of the championship banner. The whole ceremony was well done. The 1961 Stanley Cup Championship team was on hand to pass the banner over to the current champions before it was raised to the rafters.

The hawks were out played by the wings and ended up losing 3-2. Clearly it’s too early to jump to conclusions but I think the Blackhawks are going to miss a lot of the guys from the 2010 team.

Julie has some great pictures of the rest of the ceremony and game here.

Metropolitan Brewing Tour.

This past Friday Julie and I went on a tour of Metropolitan Brewing.  We’ve seen the beers around town for at least the past year (I think Hackney’s in Printers’ Row was the first place we had the Flywheel Bright Lager). Metropolitan Brewing is a small shop run by three people and an intern in the Ravenswood neighborhood of Chicago’s Northside.  The brewery is setup in an old warehouse and is all contained in one room.  For the tour, head brewer Doug Hurst, basically walked us around the space explaining their process while we were served beer throughout. Everything is done on site including the bottling and labeling with this machine:

Throughout the tour we got to taste all three of Metropolitan’s beers:  Flywheel Bright Lager, Krankshaft Kölsch and Dynamo Copper Lager.
