The Penguins come to Chicago.

Last night Julie and I went to the Penguins – Blackhawks game at the United Center.  The Pens managed to give up two separate two goal leads but Malkin put it away 5-4 in OT.  There were a ton of goals down by our side of the ice which was great.  A good mix of Pens fans in attendance as well.

The Blackhawks have been doing promo giveaways before a bunch of games all season long.  Last night’s was a Hawks hardhat.  When Jonathan Toews of the Blackhawks scored his first career hat trick the promo hardhats made their way onto the ice.  After an instant replay review the goal was called off but Toews managed to score another goal a couple minutes later and the hardhats poured down again.

The Pens went into OT on the power play and Malkin scored the game winner about a minute into the extra period.

Great game.

NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field.

Yesterday Julie and I went to the NHL Winter Classic at Wrigley Field.  To say the least it was amazing.  The first period was worth the (steep) price of admission.  The Blackhawks ended up falling to the Redwings 6-4.  The weather wasn’t unbearable and our seats were blocked from the wind.  We had a really good view of the entire ice and the seat next to us was empty.  The opening festivities were a little over the top (introducing Chicago Sports Legends twice) but once the game got going it was awesome.  The first period was pretty much non-stop action with a Detroit player getting upended into the Hawks bench.

Truly Classic.

After the game we rallied back at my place and deep fried a turkey (and grilled a pork loin).

Chicago Blackhawks off to a good start.

Opening Face-Off.

Last Thursday night Julie and I headed to Finley Dunne’s to watch overrated South Florida lose to Rutgers. After talking to the bartender about the Hockey Package he offered us tickets to the Blackhawks game on Friday. We had plans to do diner with The Frencho’s and Dom & Kelly so we decided to just catch the beginning of the game and then bail. It was worth it. The tickets were in the Bud Light Legends Lounge which just so happens to have an open bar and buffet. My kind of seats.

I was completely amazed at the lack of filled seats in the areana. At about 5 minutes before opening Face-Off I’m swear I could have counted everyone in the arena. Seemed like it was in the hundreds. There were whole sections that were empty or had 4 or 5 people in them. Amazing.

The Blackhawks got off to a quick start scoring two goals within the first 7 minutes and then taking a 3-0 lead before the 1st period was over. We left after the 1st period but we’re seriously considering getting a 5 game package. We took at a cab to Quartino and met up with everyone else for a night of more food and more drinks. The Blackhawks ended up holding on for a 5-3 victory.
